What you'll do at

The Design Engineer, Fulfillment Engineering is responsible for solving challenging and complex problems centered around material flow within the Walmart e-commerce fulfillment network. You are responsible for uncovering bottlenecks in the fulfillment process by translating the business strategy and long range plans for the fulfillment centers. Your solutions will be implemented across the Walmart e-commerce fulfillment network to ensure business success while driving down the cost of fulfillment. 

 Challenges You’ll be Tackling

Solution Concepting and Project Proposals: You will be responsible for industry benchmarking to ensure up to date knowledge across the material handling and distribution industries and using this knowledge to determine proper technologies to solve business problems. You will use proven technologies (i.e. conveyance, sortation, pallet racking, pick/put modules, automated storage and retrieval systems) to integrate into existing and new fulfillment centers to combat bottlenecks, drive throughput, and save cost.  You will collaborate with Innovation Engineering Teams and look to integrate select future technologies within the Walmart e-commerce network.

Detailed Material Handling Design: You will lead the vendor selection process and ultimately manage that vendor through a rigorous design and approval process of the material handling solution.  You will ensure cross-functional collaboration and project buy-in and will work closely with the Implementation Team to deliver a design that meets the business and project stakeholder requirements. 

Collaborative Change Management: You will lead collaboration across multiple engineering subject matter experts to drive project success. You will lead final project acceptance and sign off with the material handling supplier(s).

Responsibility

Lead the solution concepting and request for proposals (RFP) to solve business problems in the fulfillment operations.

Drive solutions that support the needs of the business and internal customers enabling the network to meet or exceed corporate goals.

Collaborates with multiple teams and team members to construct holistic project proposals that define the requirements, the scope, the schedule, the solution(s), and can be justified with a business case/need.  Ensures the solution(s) meet and integrate well with the long term strategy of the business. 

Manage the material handling vendor(s) through a rigorous detailed design of mechanical systems and drive cross-functional buy-in through the detailed design sign-off process.

Manage a cross-functional Project Team consisting of Engineers, Operators, and Maintenance personnel through the design of all material handling sub-systems and supporting project scopes that ultimately drive the realization of the project benefits.

Ensure that technical assistance is provided to the Program Managers, General Managers (GMs), operations team leaders and maintenance personnel through the implementation, start-up and operation of new automation as needed.  Aid the GMs and their teams with respect to properly leveraging the investment in automated equipment and overall fulfillment process, as needed.  Help raise the technical capabilities of the facilities by assisting in the training of maintenance personnel and operations personnel.  Provide training plans and assistance to Operations and Maintenance associates as needed.

Develops good communication plans at the onset of Project initiation and sets the expectation from the start.

Travel

Travels domestically to and from Hoboken, Bentonville, San Bruno and all Walmart and Jet facilities or work-sites to participate in meetings, workshops, installation activities and support, company events, etc. requiring overnight stays.

Qualifications

Minimum of 2 years of experience working on design of material handling equipment or distribution engineering.

Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Robotics, Systems, or related technical field

Bonus Points

Advanced Problem-Solving Certifications (ie. Green Belt, Black Belt)

Prior e-commerce experience as a Design or Automation Engineer or related

Previous experience leading complex automation system designs
