More people, are taking more photos today, driven by the mass adoption of smartphone technology. Cameras in phones are getting better in ways customers can see, with computational software making up for limitations in hardware and customers photography skill. The net result is customers are taking trillions of images per year. 

Similarly, the way customers are storing, consuming, and revisiting these memories/content are also being driven by significant improvements in technology. Shifts is platforms (Facebook/Instagram/Snap/YouTube), hardware (Android/iPhone), storage (iCloud/Google Cloud & Photos/Dropbox/AWS etc), messaging (WhatsApp/FB Messenger/Google), along with falling costs of storage (Moore's Law) have driven customers to print much less, but share MUCH more via connected networks.

Thus far, outside of selling connected devices to consume this content, retailers have failed to lead the monetisation of this personal image content growth. The Photo and Personalized team is focused on creating amazing product experiences for customers who take and share photos, and create unique products.

About the Role

Business Relationships:

  • Manages relationships with key strategic suppliers for a category with few complexities
  • Negotiates product volumes, costs, and terms with vendors for a category with few complexities
  • Develops and leverages internal and external partnerships and networks to maximize the achievement of business goals

Category Financials:

  • Builds a data-driven strategic business plan with tangible execution steps for a category with few complexities
  • Develops and communicates budgets
  • Manages P&L for business area or category
  • Maintains overall responsibility for meeting financial targets (e.g. GMV and margin), and communicating (and ensuring the team executes upon) levers to achieve those targets

Category Tracking/Monitoring:

  • Provides guidance and strategic direction regarding tracking and monitoring performance for a category with few complexities based on broad industry and organizational knowledge
  • Maintains overall accountability for category performance across multiple sites

Change Leadership:

  • Creates momentum and excitement for change


  • Collaborates with product teams to establish the site as a best-in-class leader within its product categories for a category with few complexities
  • Partners with merchants to determine how to expand category through existing vendor relationships
  • Coordinates with brick and mortar store representatives and merchants who own Walmart US relationship for products in a category with few complexities to drive sales and margin growth through the omni-channel
  • Cultivates an environment where associates respect and adhere to company standards of integrity and ethics
  • Develops and implements strategies to attract and maintain a highly skilled and engaged workforce
  • Develops and leverages internal and external partnerships and networks to maximize the achievement of business goals

Empowering Others:

  • Supports a favorable environment in a category with few complexities in which managers are empowered to lead and execute on the category's strategy and objectives

Market Positioning and Analytics:

  • Directs the analysis of key market and product positioning information for a category with few complexities and builds expertise across retailer/brand dynamics, shopper requirements, competitor site benchmarking, etc.
  • Reviews and develops plans for category success based on analysis
  • Determines category assortment and strategy/market positioning across multiple websites and drives continuous improvement through strategic partnerships with retailers and brands
  • Advises on best way to optimize product sourcing mix.

People Development:

  • Ensures associates are receiving learning and development opportunities (e.g. training, mentoring) for the good of the associate and Walmart
  • Coaches team members and provides feedback to enhance skills, knowledge and work performance
  • Mentors Category Managers and less experienced associates
  • Provides overall direction

Shopper/Customer Experience:

  • Provides strategic advice and guidance to Category Managers regarding online presence for categories with few complexities
  • Recommends enhancements based on industry and organizational knowledge and best practices

Strategic Visioning:

  • Develops comprehensive strategy for a category with few complexities to drive growth of the business or category
  • Translates vision and strategy into action to motivate and inspire own team (including Category Managers) to drive key levers impacting category excellence

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, retail or related field
  • 6 years experience in category management, pricing, site merchandising, planning or inventory planning or related area OR 7 years of experience in business, retail, category management, pricing, site merchandising, planning or inventory planning or related area

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 years supervisory experience
