What you'll do at

The Manager, Engineering Strategy, Fulfillment Engineering is responsible for managing the strategic roadmap of next generation solutions (machines, processes, work stations, etc., automated and manual) for use within the extended Walmart e-commerce fulfillment network (including Walmart sortable, Walmart Non-sortable, Jet Sortable, Jet Fresh, Sam’s Club, Hayneedle, Shoebuy, etc.).

Challenges you’ll be tackling

Source and evaluate new technologies and suppliers:  You will foster relationships, partnerships, and collaborations between suppliers, research institutes, and innovation incubators across the world to source new technologies and suppliers for Walmart e-commerce.   You will benchmark cutting-edge technologies to determine their technical viability and their strategic value to Walmart e-commerce. 

Determine strategic project roadmap:  You will analyze Walmart’s future needs for the Walmart e-commerce network and will determine where strategic projects will be required to address throughput, cube, SKU capacity, and VCPU needs.  You will lay out a path of projects to transform the current-state network capabilities to the future-state network capabilities required.

Build strong partnerships:  You will support strategic relationships with key suppliers who provide long-term value to the fulfillment network.  In service of the growing needs of the network, you will ensure our suppliers can provide timely service at competitive prices for the variety of projects in the strategic pipeline.

Responsibilities

Manage the technical research and design of next generation technologies to support the growth of the e-commerce fulfillment network. 

Lead the technical assessment of potential suppliers and assist with the selection, use and application of automated processes within the extended Walmart e-commerce fulfillment network.  Establish solutions that support the vision for the implementation of cutting edge-automated systems and solutions that enable the Walmart e-commerce fulfillment network to meet or exceed corporate goals. 

Constantly evaluate and assess new technologies and foster the development of next generation automated solutions that drive Walmart e-commerce growth.  Be a corporate leader driving the effort to continuously development and have world-class fulfilment solutions that position Walmart as the leader in the e-commerce space.

Provide guidance to all individuals as needed by sharing experience and broad knowledge of industry technologies, equipment, and material handling solutions as well as lean process flow and continuous improvement tools, to break barriers and unlock the potential of the Fulfillment Engineering Organization. 

This position will manage projects and provide guidance to project team members to ensure technology/solutions are evaluated in a comphrensive and agile manner . Sponsor continuous improvement and continuous learning. Lead both internal and external benchmarking to identify opportunity for continuous improvement.

Generate executive presentations, animations, video, business cases and other communication media, as needed, to convey next generation fulfillment technologies to the engineering leadership team to keep them informed of the strategy, plans and future programs.

Represent Walmart e-commerce by engaging in industry technical events, industry presentations and other industry technical networking events as appropriate.

Travel

Travels domestically to and from Hoboken, Bentonville, San Bruno and all Walmart and Jet facilities or work-sites to participate in meetings, workshops, company events, etc. requiring overnight stays. (Percent of travel = 50% or more)

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience working in a fast-paced environment, effectively managing projects and programs to deliver results on time and within budget, including experience managing suppliers and contract negotiation/management. 
  • Minimum 2 years of operations experience working in a highly-automated facility or high-speed manufacturing environment or within a fulfillment center, distribution center, last mile sortation or warehouse.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related technical field.
  • Master’s degree in technical engineering discipline or Master’s in Business.

Bonus Points

  • Field/customer service experience a plus.
  • Previous experience leading a design organization at Manager or above.
  • Prior experience with patent protection and intellectual property protection.
